Museums

Museums must not be mere custodians, but transformers. Nurseries where cultural heritage arrives as the seed of a nostalgic past and evolves into the tree of an innovative future. Museums must turn open fields into forests.

The Re-Connection Museum is an Art Gallery and Panoramic Restaurant project proposal (October 2026), forming part of the Re-Connection initiative by MWA. The initiative aims to re-connect medieval cultural heritage with the contemporary identity of the communities around the Maggiore Lake. Today, these communities belong to three different administrative regions (Piemonte, Lombardia, Canton Ticino) and two countries (Italy and Switzerland), yet share a medieval heritage rooted in the historical region named Insubria. The Gallery aims to serve as the main exhibition hall of the Re-Visions teritorial photographic exhibitions with the artistic direction of Jill Mathis. The initiative is sponsored by Big Emotion and promoted by Unione Industriale VCO.

The architectural and structural design are based on four concepts. (1) The four tree-like pillars represent the three regions and the lake as the territorial context. (2) The two arboreal stair-towers represent the past and the present, which are the roots and the strength of any cultural identity. The towers' roofs also serve as panoramic terraces, and they symbolically recall that only through an elavated and systemic perspective of past and present can we envision and build the best future. (3) The museum gallery, set on a bridge-like structural system, represents the medieval cultural heritage that connects - the bridge - the past and present territorial identities. (4) The panoramic restaurant represents the need to create museums also as sources and developers of new economy.
